Business owners at Kiritiri Market in Mbeere North Constituency, Embu County have reported declined sales and mounting losses following recent protests that disrupted transport and triggered looting incidents.

Those who spoke said the unrest interfered with normal operations, keeping customers away due to security fears and significantly affecting daily earnings. Some warned they might be forced to shut down or relocate if the situation persisted.

Local business leaders cautioned that continued instability could undermine recent economic gains in the area.

Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI) Embu Chapter Chairman John Mugo Mate said while Embu remained an attractive investment destination, the disruptions dealt a financial blow to traders.

“If the trend continued, many traders might be forced to either relocate or close down their businesses,” he said, urging swift action to restore confidence among investors and the business community.

Authorities, however, reassured traders of their commitment to maintaining security. The regional security committee, led by Mbeere South Sub-County Commissioner Jacob Mwaura, said measures were in place to protect businesses during demonstrations.

Mwaura urged traders to support security efforts by sharing CCTV footage with police to help identify and apprehend those involved in criminal activities.
