A section of boda boda riders in Embu County has praised police officers for what they described as unusual restraint during Tuesday’s nationwide protests over high fuel prices.

The riders, led by Joseph Thuku, popularly known as Kaka, said officers handled demonstrators calmly and avoided the violent confrontations that have in the past led to injuries, deaths, and destruction of property.

They noted that excessive use of force during protests often escalates tensions and creates loopholes for opportunistic looting, urging security agencies to maintain the same approach in future demonstrations.

Despite their praise for police conduct, the operators expressed concern over the rising cost of fuel, which they said continues to strain their livelihoods.

However, they opted not to join the protests, saying dialogue remains the most effective way to address their grievances.

David Kabaka, another rider, dismissed claims that they were involved in mobilizing demonstrations in Embu Town, distancing the group from organized protest activity.

Jackson Nyaga, popularly known as Ruto, called on the government to urgently review fuel prices to ease the burden on ordinary Kenyans, citing the impact of global factors such as conflicts in the Middle East.

Meanwhile, tension remained high in Embu Town for much of Tuesday, with heavy police deployment across key areas as authorities moved to prevent possible unrest. Many businesses stayed closed, with traders fearing vandalism and looting.

Business leaders, led by Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry Embu Chapter Chairperson Mugo Mate, also urged the government to take swift action to lower fuel prices, warning that the rising costs are hurting the cost of doing business.
