Farmers in Embu County have been urged to embrace soil testing to boost productivity and reduce losses caused by uninformed fertilizer use.

Experts from the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO) made the call during an open farmers’ day event held at the KALRO Embu Centre, where they emphasized the importance of understanding soil health before applying inputs.

KALRO Embu Centre Director Bernard Rono said many farmers continue to apply fertilizer blindly, resulting in poor yields. He stressed the need for modern, smart agricultural practices and said soil testing is the foundation of successful farming.

“We want to equip farmers with knowledge through regular training. Soil testing is key if we are to improve food security and raise incomes,” Rono said.

He added that KALRO has launched a long-term plan to train and support farmers in adopting efficient and sustainable methods.

Echoing his remarks, Embu County Agriculture Director Jackline Mutende noted that technology uptake in farming remains low in the region but expressed hope that consistent training would drive change.

“There’s a clear link between knowledge, technology, and productivity. These programs can transform agriculture in Embu,” Mutende said.

Farmers who attended the event described the training as timely and eye-opening. John Njue said many apply fertilizer without knowing what their soils require, often with disappointing results.

Morris Mugambi called for regular training sessions, terming them a game changer.

“I urge fellow farmers to take them seriously and implement what we learn,” he said.

Youthful farmer Fabian Munene encouraged young people to explore modern agriculture, saying it offers rewarding opportunities when approached with the right mindset and knowledge.

The event attracted over 1,500 farmers from across the region.
