Embu County Assembly Clerk and Runyenjes parliamentary aspirant Jim Kauma has endorsed calls for the Mount Kenya East region to chart its own political identity, arguing that the move would give the region equal space to articulate its interests outside the broader Central Kenya bloc.
Speaking to journalists after a burial service in Runyenjes Constituency, Kauma said Mount Kenya East should be allowed to define its political direction independently, just as Mount Kenya West has done over the years.
“It would be unfair to deny Mount Kenya East the same political space others enjoy. Every region has unique priorities and challenges that require a clear and independent voice,” Kauma said.
He dismissed criticism from leaders opposed to the proposal, terming their resistance unjustified and counterproductive.

According to Kauma, political diversity within the larger Mount Kenya region should be viewed as a strength rather than a threat.
Kauma noted that an independent political identity would enable leaders from Mount Kenya East to negotiate more effectively on development, resource allocation, and representation, without being overshadowed by dominant blocs.
The debate over Mount Kenya East’s political future has gained momentum in recent weeks, with proponents insisting that counties such as Embu, Meru and Tharaka Nithi have historically been politically marginalized despite their strategic importance.
However, critics argue that fragmenting the Mount Kenya region could weaken its collective bargaining power at the national level, especially ahead of the 2027 General Election.
As discussions continue, Kauma called for sober dialogue among leaders and residents, urging them to focus on unity of purpose while respecting regional political aspirations.
