More than 200 women farmers in Embu County have undergone agricultural training aimed at boosting food production, strengthening food security and improving household incomes.
The women, drawn from various parts of the county, participated in interactive training sessions held on Thursday and designed to equip them with practical skills to transition from subsistence to sustainable and commercial farming.
The training was organized by the Women Farmers Association of Kenya (WOFAK) in partnership with the Embu County Department of Agriculture and Rainforest Alliance.
Speaking during the forum, Embu County Chief Officer for Agriculture Stephen Njeru Mwita underscored the central role women play in Kenya’s agricultural sector, noting that they form a significant proportion of the farming population.

“In Kenya, women constitute about 43 per cent of farmers. Empowering them is therefore key to improving crop production and enhancing food security,” Mwita said.
He added that the county government will continue supporting female farmers through the provision of quality seeds and other inputs to boost agricultural output.

WOFAK representative Winnie Murithi said the initiative seeks to strengthen agricultural value chains by promoting collaboration among women farmers, enabling them to access better markets and increase their earnings.
On her part, Susan Kinyua of Rainforest Alliance noted that the project also aims to link women farmers with financial institutions to support the growth of their agribusinesses.
“Women farmers need empowerment in skills, resources and access to finance to significantly improve productivity, livelihoods and food security in Embu,” Kinyua said.
