The University of Embu has released Sh3 million in financial aid to 356 needy students through its Endowment Fund, easing tuition burdens just days before end-of-semester examinations begin on Monday, April 7.

This year’s allocation marks a rise from last year’s disbursement of Sh2.6 million to 284 students, reflecting the growing impact of the fund.

Speaking during the cheque issuance on Saturday, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Daniel Mugendi reaffirmed the university’s commitment to ensuring equitable access to education, particularly for students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

“Every financial year, the university commits Sh2.5 million to sustain this fund, ensuring that financially disadvantaged students have a chance to continue their studies,” said Prof. Mugendi.

He noted that external contributions from fundraising marathons, golf tournaments, and donation drives have supported the fund’s growth.

“We are committed to expanding this initiative further through strategic partnerships and increased donor engagement,” he added.

Prof. Mugendi also emphasized that the selection process remains transparent and merit-based to ensure fairness and integrity in the disbursement of funds.

Former Embu Senator Lenny Kivuti, who chairs the Endowment Fund’s Board of Trustees, urged beneficiaries to make the most of the support, terming education a vital tool for personal and national development.

“This support is a stepping stone—use it wisely to shape your future and give back to society,” said Kivuti.

He revealed plans to grow the fund to a Sh10 billion investment to reach more students and called on alumni and well-wishers to contribute.

Student leader Philemon Kibet praised the initiative as a timely intervention that saved many students from missing their exams due to unpaid fees.

“With this support, many students now have hope and stability to pursue their academic goals,” Kibet said.

The University of Embu Endowment Fund is a critical lifeline, underlining the institution’s efforts to foster inclusive and accessible higher education.
