A group of local artists in Runyenjes constituency in Embu County have announced the launch of “Talents Against Drugs” concerts in a determined effort to combat the escalating issue of drug abuse among youth.
This initiative aims to use the power of music and performance arts to raise awareness and educate young people about the dangers of substance abuse.
The concert series is set to kick off on Sunday, 2nd June 2024 at Runyenjes town-Equity Bank Street at noon with events scheduled to take place across various locations in Embu County on different dates and venues.
“We have seen firsthand the devastating effects of drug abuse on our young people. As artists, we have a platform and a responsibility to use our voices for good,” said Ras Makumi Njue, a reggae artist.
Makumi said through the concerts, they hope to inspire and educate the youth, showing them healthier and more fulfilling ways to live their lives.
The “Talents Against Drugs” concerts will feature diverse performances, including music, dance, poetry, and drama, centered around resilience, hope, and the importance of making positive life choices.
In addition to the performances, the events will also include speeches from willing recovered addicts, counselors, and local leaders, offering resources and support to those affected by drug abuse.
Honey Candy, an Afropops artist, emphasized community involvement’s importance in tackling this issue.
“Drug abuse is not just an individual problem; it affects entire families and communities. By coming together, we can create a strong support network and offer our young people the guidance and opportunities they need to stay away from drugs,” she said.
The initiative has garnered support from various opinion leaders and human rights activists.
“This is a critical issue that requires a multifaceted approach, and initiatives like ‘Talents Against Drugs’ are a vital part of the solution,” said Taratisio Ireri Kawe, a human rights activist.
