Residents of Embu County have been urged to register with the Social Health Authority (SHA) to benefit from the ongoing Daktari Mashinani health outreach programme targeting rural communities across the county.
Speaking during a medical camp at Kianjokoma in Runyenjes Constituency, family medicine specialist Dr. Mercy Wanjala said SHA registration is mandatory for residents seeking specialized treatment under the programme.
Dr. Wanjala noted that the initiative has significantly improved access to healthcare services, especially for low-income families who struggle to afford treatment in major hospitals.
She said the outreach programme is offering a range of specialized services including cancer screening, eye check-ups, diabetes and hypertension screening, as well as consultations with specialist doctors.
The medic praised the large turnout witnessed during the exercise and encouraged more residents from different parts of the county to take advantage of the programme, saying it forms part of the county government’s efforts to improve healthcare services at the grassroots level.
Residents who benefited from the medical camp welcomed the initiative, saying it has eased the burden of travelling long distances to seek treatment at Embu Level Five Hospital.
They said the free medical services have helped save transport costs and other hospital expenses during the current tough economic times while enabling them to access quality healthcare services closer to their homes.
The Daktari Mashinani programme has already been conducted in Gategi and Kianjokoma and is expected to continue in other parts of the county to be announced later.
