The University of Embu has partnered with non-profit Jacob’s Ladder Africa (JLA) to train young people in green skills, in a bold move to tackle youth unemployment and prepare graduates for emerging opportunities in the green economy.

The collaboration, unveiled during the launch of the Green Careers Caravan (GCC) at the university grounds, marks a significant step toward empowering students with knowledge in renewable energy, climate-smart agriculture, waste management, and other sustainable innovations.

Vice Chancellor Prof. Daniel Mugendi praised the initiative, saying it aims to not only create employment but also inspire entrepreneurship among the youth, positioning them as key drivers of Kenya’s transition to a low-carbon economy. He added that the partnership aligns with the government’s vision to engage young people at the forefront of climate action and sustainability.

Jacob’s Ladder Africa CEO and Co-Founder Sellah Bogonko highlighted the importance of equipping the youth with future-ready skills to bridge poverty and unemployment gaps worsened by climate change. “Our mission is to catalyze 30 million green jobs for African youth by 2033,” she noted.

The caravan’s stop at Embu University comes amid Kenya’s deepening youth unemployment crisis — nearly 12 percent of the youthful workforce and over 31 percent of the 10 million young people in the labour market remain jobless or underemployed.

Students expressed optimism that the initiative will open new career pathways and reduce dependence on traditional white-collar jobs, positioning them to thrive in a fast-growing green economy.
