Tensions are rising in Mbeere North as the Democratic Party (DP) and Devolution Empowerment Party (DEP) allege a voter rigging plot orchestrated by operatives linked to the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ahead of a high-stakes by-election.

DP leader Justin Muturi and DEP’s Lenny Kivuti claimed that efforts were underway to register voters outside Embu County, with plans to ferry them into Mbeere North on election day.

The two leaders, speaking during a public meeting at Kanyuambora attended by over 2,000 locals, vowed to resist any attempt to manipulate the vote.

“We know each other in Mbeere North. Anybody planning to steal the election is ill-advised,” Kivuti warned, alleging that schemes were being run from Nairobi under questionable circumstances.

Kivuti called on residents to remain calm but vigilant, emphasizing the need for a credible electoral process.

“They will find us waiting and we will not allow them to vote since we know each other,” he said defiantly.

Muturi echoed the concerns, warning that any electoral malpractice would be firmly confronted.

“Those planning to rig this election should know they are dialing the wrong number. We are very observant, and we want peaceful campaigns,” he stated.

The opposition leaders have thrown their weight behind Newton Kariuki, DP’s candidate in the by-election, whom they describe as the people’s choice.

Muturi accused the establishment of fearing Kariuki due to his performance record and popularity on the ground.

Karish expressed confidence in the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), terming the by-election a “litmus test” for the body’s credibility.

“I believe they will conduct a credible exercise. We are equal to the task,” he said.

The race has shaped into a fierce three-horse contest. Kariuki faces stiff competition from UDA’s Leonard Muthende, backed by Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku and government machinery.

Ruku has been traversing the region, urging voters to support the ruling party to ensure continued development.

Also in the race is Chama Cha Kazi (CCK) candidate Duncan Mbui, a two-term MCA with strong roots in Evurori Ward. Backed by Moses Kuria, Mbui is marketing himself as a “compromise candidate,” appealing for votes based on legislative experience over party loyalty.

With top political figures pouring resources and influence into Mbeere North, the by-election is shaping up as a critical political battleground with potential ramifications on broader political alliances ahead of the next general election.
