The sudden and mysterious death of Kariobangi North MCA Joel Munuve Kimanzi has ignited fear and calls for enhanced security among ward representatives in Embu County, who suspect foul play tied to anti-corruption efforts.
During a heated plenary session, the MCAs raised alarm over what they described as growing threats against grassroots leaders fighting corruption, warning that Munuve’s death could be part of a disturbing trend aimed at silencing vocal oversight champions.
Makima MCA Philip Nzangi questioned why the government has failed to provide security to ward leaders who handle oversight roles involving billions of shillings, terming it a risky responsibility that leaves them vulnerable.
“MCAs are on the frontline in the fight against corruption, yet we are left unprotected. How many more deaths before the government takes our safety seriously?” Nzangi posed.
Nominated MCA Agnes Gakungugu said the integrity role of MCAs was increasingly being misinterpreted as political witch hunts, warning those targeting county lawmakers that they, too, have families.
Kagaari North MCA Mucangi Mwariama urged colleagues not to retreat from their watchdog role, saying the suspicious death of Kimanzi must instead fuel greater commitment to public accountability.
Nominated MCA Yvonne Mate cited a growing number of MCA deaths in recent years, asserting that the protection of public resources should not come at the cost of lives.
The Assembly resolved to demand a swift investigation into Munuve’s death and vowed to issue a joint public statement once the inquest reveals the cause of death.
The session also witnessed tension after a petition by Kithimu MCA Julius Karuri — demanding increased protection for newly appointed Public Service Principal Secretary Geoffrey Ruku — was dismissed by Temporary Speaker Newton Kariuki.
Karuri had expressed concern that Ruku had only one bodyguard and a single chase car instead of the standard five.
As pressure mounts for answers, Embu MCAs maintain that the fight against graft must not be derailed by fear or intimidation.
