Residents of Kiambere Ward in Mbeere South, Embu County have urged the government to increase support for orphaned children and accelerate key infrastructure projects, citing worsening food insecurity and economic challenges in the semi-arid region.
Speaking during the distribution of education bursaries to orphaned children, guardians emphasized the need for sustained government assistance to protect vulnerable children.
The bursaries, totaling Sh550,000, were raised from sand proceeds through the Kiambere Ward Community-Based Organization (KWCBO), benefiting over 150 orphans.
Kiambere MCA Lenny Masters, who also serves as the KWCBO Patron, called on the government to fast-track the Kiambere Dam–Kiambere Hill water project, stressing that the initiative is critical for residents of Kiambere and Muminji wards, who continue to suffer from prolonged drought and poor harvests.
“We are facing a serious water crisis. This project will provide much-needed relief to our people,” Masters stated.
Additionally, he urged the national government to upgrade the Kiritiri–Kiambere–Mutuobare road to bitumen standards, arguing that improved infrastructure would spur economic growth and attract investment to the region.
Masters also voiced concerns over the perceived inequitable distribution of development projects, claiming that initiatives meant for Kiambere often commence in the neighboring Mavuria Ward.
He demanded fair project allocation, in line with constitutional principles of regional balance.
“For equity and fairness, let them start the road from Mutuobare through Kiambere to Kiritiri, so that the people of Kiambere feel they are part of this government,” he said.
Residents echoed these concerns, calling on the county and national governments to prioritize their needs, particularly in addressing food insecurity, orphan care, and infrastructure development.
