Embu County residents have been warned against slaughtering animals at home or consuming meat from unknown sources following an outbreak of bovine anthrax in the upper region.

The County’s Department of Health has confirmed two cases of the disease, which has already claimed the lives of two livestock.

Embu County Executive Committee Member for Health, Jamal Runyenje, issued the warning as health and veterinary officials intensified efforts to contain the outbreak.

“We urge everyone to adhere to strict guidelines on food safety and report any unusual animal deaths immediately. This is crucial in preventing the disease from spreading further,” Runyenje said.

The Department of Veterinary Services has mobilized local communities, providing treatment to affected livestock and conducting awareness campaigns on anthrax prevention. Below is the media brief:

Livestock owners have been advised to avoid handling sick or dead animals without protective gear and seek immediate veterinary intervention for any suspected cases.

Anthrax, caused by the bacterium Bacillus anthracis, is highly contagious and can spread to humans through direct contact with infected animals or consumption of contaminated meat.

Public health teams have been dispatched to educate residents about the risks and symptoms of the disease, which can be fatal if not promptly treated.

Authorities are also monitoring meat markets in the region to ensure no contaminated products are sold.

Health officers have called for vigilance among traders and residents, urging them to purchase meat from certified sources.
