Embu Woman Representative Pamela Njoki Njeru has successfully secured the release of a woman, Ann Murugi alias Mama Kariuki, who had been serving a one-year prison sentence.
The intervention followed a heartfelt plea from the Siakago Kianthawa community in Mbeere North over the weekend.
Murugi, who recently gave birth while incarcerated, faced severe hardship as her other children were left homeless due to the lack of financial resources for rent and food.
Moved by the community’s appeal, Njoki took compassionate action to reunite the family and provide the necessary support during this challenging time.
“After enduring months of separation and hardship, she was overwhelmed with joy and relief as she reunited with her children,” said Njoki.
The woman was arrested in March while working at a bar that had not renewed its operating license.
She was convicted and fined Sh60,000, which she could not raise, prompting her one-year jail term at the Embu Maximum Prison.
Her employer did not come forward to assist, leaving the pregnant woman to serve her sentence and leaving her two children without a caretaker.
The reunion was marked with an outpouring of joy as the community welcomed her back on Monday.
Veronica Mwaniki, Murugi’s neighbor, praised the county MP’s selfless act, calling it a true reflection of humanity.
“This is what leadership with a human face looks like,” she said, her voice filled with admiration and gratitude.
The tearful sight of her children’s faces and the embrace that followed were profound reminders of the resilience of familial bonds, even in the face of adversity.
