A section of women in Embu County has expressed dissatisfaction with their Woman representative, Pamela Njoki Njeru, claiming that her programs do not benefit them and that she does not genuinely support women’s interests in parliament.
Women from Manyatta Constituency, particularly Kirimari Ward, have accused Njoki of sidelining some regions in the distribution of National Government Affirmative Action Funds (NGAAF) under her patronage.
Rosemary Mutito, a resident of Mikimbi village, voiced her disappointment, noting that since Njoki took office, she is rarely seen in the area.
“I prefer the previous woman representative as she would visit us often and empower women who have formed groups by giving them chickens to start businesses and tents for renting out,” said Mutito.
Purity Muthoni, a resident of Gatoori village, said woman rep bursaries in Embu County are merely hearsay to her.
“I only hear about empowerment programs by our woman rep on the radio. I am yet to meet any beneficiary,” Muthoni said.
Florence Njeru, a resident of Riamaciri Village, called upon the woman representative to visit and support the numerous women’s groups in her village.
“We have many women groups that need support in this village. I am calling upon our woman representative to visit and learn more about us,” she said.
The women have challenged Njoki to be more visible on the ground and to ensure equitable distribution of resources within the county, urging her to stop mere public relations efforts and take meaningful action.
Addressing the public during a field visit in Riamaciri village, Kirimari Ward MCA Ibrahim Swaleh, highlighted the concerns raised by the women and urged the woman rep to engage more with the community and address their grievances.
“It is sad to hear these women complain about the lack of support for women’s groups, especially when we have a woman representative. We need to see where the allocated 28 million NGAAF funds given to our woman representative are going,” said Swaleh.
In response, Njoki who spoke over the phone dismissed the allegations, stating that they were politically motivated. However, she was yet to provide a list of projects she had undertaken in the area by the time of publishing this story.
Swaleh who doubles as the Deputy Speaker in the County Assembly of Embu urged the woman rep to lobby for laws that support women’s interests in parliament, emphasizing the need for better engagement and equitable resource distribution.
