Embu residents joined hands with Cabinet Secretary (CS) for the Ministry of Investment, Trade, and Industry, Rebecca Miano, in planting 1,500 trees to commemorate lives lost to flooding.
The government declared May 10 a public holiday for National Tree Planting Day.
The tree planting event held at Irangi forest in Runyenjes sub-county was part of the government’s initiative to achieve a 30 percent tree cover by 2032.
CS Miano emphasized the importance of trees in mitigating climate change and promoting food security and job creation.
“Fruit trees will help increase food security and provide job opportunities, uplifting the residents’ livelihoods. Out of 10, I urge you to plant two fruit trees,” said CS Miano.
Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire noted that the county is at 28 percent tree cover and aims to reach the 30 percent minimum requirement.
She highlighted the county’s recent efforts, including planting 15,500 trees in the Irangi forest over the past three days.
Mbarire urged residents to continue the initiative, noting that her administration will continue to support farmers with fruit tree seedlings like avocados, mangoes, and macadamia, which would play a major role in sustaining the county Aggregation Industrial Park.
“I thank our president for declaring today as a National tree planting holiday so that we could plant more trees, which will help to mitigate the negative effects of climate change,” added Mbarire.
The event was attended by the Principal Secretary for the State Department of Trade and Investment Promotion, Abubakar Hassan, and the State Department for Trade’s Alfred Ombuda.
