An MCA from Embu County has issued a compelling challenge, urging youngsters to broaden their horizons and consider a wide array of opportunities, rather than overlooking certain professions.
The Muminji Ward MCA, Newton Kariuki emphasized the need for a paradigm shift in attitudes towards different jobs.
Speaking during the launch of The Weekend Plan Ushers’ strategic plan, Kariuki said the value of a profession should not be measured solely by its societal status or monetary remuneration but rather by its potential for personal fulfillment and contribution to society.
“I am compelled to think how events would look like if we didn’t have ushers. Big events would be very chaotic. You can’t even be able to know the seating arrangements. In churches, we have seen ushers doing a very good job,” Kariuki said.
The MCA likened the role of ushers to a divine calling, emphasizing the importance of passion and dedication in their service.

According to the MCA, ushers are the gatekeepers of hospitality, ensuring that every individual who crosses the threshold feels welcomed and valued.
“So, let’s not see this as a small job. God was the first usher and He ushered the day and night. He also ushered Adam to the Garden of Eden. So you are great people. Do your work well and we will support you,” he said.
The Weekend Plan Ushers is a group of Embu youth, formed in 2021 focusing on empowerment and growth.
“We are intentional about being part of solutions to our problems instead of sitting down and waiting for leaders to do things for us,” said Ephantus Murithi, the group’s CEO.
