Manyatta MP Gitonga Mukunji has called for tax relief on animal feeds and other agricultural inputs to lower production costs, boost milk yields and address Kenya’s milk shortage.
Mukunji said the high cost of livestock feeds was making it difficult for dairy farmers to maximise milk production, arguing that reducing the cost of farming should take priority in efforts to increase the country’s milk supply.
Speaking during the handover of a National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF)-financed sub-chief’s office at Kiambuthi in Kirimari Ward, the legislator questioned President William Ruto’s proposal to introduce buffaloes for milk production.
He argued that the government should first support existing dairy farmers by making animal feeds more affordable instead of introducing alternative milk-producing animals.
Mukunji maintained that reducing the cost of feeds could enable farmers to increase milk output, potentially doubling production while improving their earnings.
He said lowering the cost of agricultural inputs would provide practical support to dairy farmers and help the country address its milk supply challenges.
