Students across six Eastern region counties are set to gain greater access to digital learning and interact with their peers beyond their schools under a new government programme aimed at bridging geographical and educational gaps.

The Digital Classroom and Interactive Board Programme is connecting learners in Meru, Tharaka-Nithi, Embu, Makueni, Machakos and Kitui through joint online lessons, allowing them to share learning experiences and develop digital skills.

The programme, being implemented by the Ministry of ICT in collaboration with the ICT Authority, Ministry of Education and other stakeholders, was launched at Meru Comprehensive School in North Imenti on Thursday.

Permanent Secretary for ICT Roseline Njogu and PS for Forestry Gitonga Mugambi joined students for a joint online lesson with learners from selected schools across the six counties, demonstrating how technology would bring students together regardless of their location.

Njogu said the programme is being rolled out across the country and will provide learners with opportunities to access technology-enabled education.

“I understand that this programme is well done and it will cover the whole country,” Njogu said.

She added that more than 60,000 trainers across the country have already been equipped with digital skills, as part of a wider government programme targeting 350,000 teachers.

Njogu said although Meru Comprehensive School is hosting the programme’s launch in Meru, equipment has also been distributed to other schools in the county to expand access to digital learning.

Mugambi said the programme is designed to promote equal opportunities among learners by ensuring that students can access modern technology irrespective of where they live.

“We are equipping our students to face the challenges of the future so that they become world citizens and be able to work all over the world. They are fit for the purpose,” Mugambi said.

He also expressed appreciation to the President for supporting initiatives that enable students to interact with their peers from other counties, saying such exposure will help prepare learners for the demands of an increasingly digital global society.
