The Ministry of Health has reaffirmed Kenya’s commitment to championing regional nutrition policy reforms to improve food environments and tackle malnutrition across East Africa.

Speaking at the close of the East Africa Regional Dialogue on Policies to Transform Markets for Nutritious Foods held in Mombasa, the Ministry, through Dr. Joseph Lenai, Director of Preventive and Promotive Health Services, emphasized the urgency of coordinated regional action to combat undernutrition, micronutrient deficiencies, and the growing obesity crisis.

The Ministry revealed that non-communicable diseases (NCDs) now account for 39% of deaths in Kenya, over half of all hospital admissions, and 11% of total health spending.

In response, Kenya is fast-tracking food policy reforms, including front-of-pack nutrition labeling and restrictions on marketing unhealthy foods, especially those aimed at children.

The government also pledged to strengthen legislative frameworks, enhance cross-sector collaboration, and deepen engagement with East African Community (EAC) member states for sustainable nutrition outcomes.

The forum, co-hosted by the Ministry of Health, African Population and Health Research Centre (APHRC), and Access to Nutrition Initiative (ATNi), brought together policymakers, civil society, academia, and private sector actors to evaluate progress and exchange strategies for transforming regional food systems.

The Ministry lauded the role of research and civil society in driving evidence-based policies and accountability in nutrition efforts, affirming Kenya’s resolve to build resilient food systems that ensure access to safe, nutritious, and affordable diets for all.
