Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has called on visiting political leaders to conduct their engagements respectfully while touring Meru County, saying leaders from across the political divide are welcome in the region as long as they avoid insults and confrontational rhetoric.

Kindiki said he had earlier cautioned opposition leaders currently touring the county to approach their activities with respect for local residents and leaders.

“I had earlier tried to warn the strangers who are still in this county to come slowly and with respect, but they did not listen,” he said.

He maintained that while Meru remains open to leaders from different political camps, mutual respect should guide political engagements.

“You are welcome here in Meru, but you must stop insulting us,” he said, referring to remarks he claimed had been directed at local leadership.

The Deputy President also drew comparisons between his leadership experience and that of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, outlining his years in public service.

Kindiki noted that he has served as a senator for ten years, Senate Majority Leader for five years, Senate Deputy Speaker and Cabinet Secretary for Interior, while Gachagua previously served as a District Officer and a one-term Member of Parliament.

He further cited former presidents Uhuru Kenyatta and the late Mwai Kibaki as examples of humility in leadership.

“We have seen presidents who were very humble, like President Uhuru and the late President Kibaki,” he said, adding that leadership should be exercised with humility and respect.

The Deputy President made the remarks on Sunday after attending the induction of Rev. David Muthuia Mwiti as Bishop of the Kaaga Synod of the Methodist Church of Kenya during a ceremony held at Kaaga MCK Grounds in North Imenti.

The event attracted a large congregation of faithful and leaders, with heightened security at the venue due to the presence of political activities in the county.

After the church service, Kindiki made a stopover at Makutano Market where he addressed residents and supporters.
