Embu County has kicked off a large-scale vaccination campaign to protect cattle from Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD), following reports of isolated infections across the region.
County Agriculture Executive John Nyaga said the drive aims to prevent a widespread outbreak that could devastate farmers’ livelihoods.
“I urge all farmers to cooperate so we can safeguard their livestock through vaccination,” he said.
The county plans to vaccinate about 96,000 cattle, emphasizing that routine vaccination remains the only effective method since FMD has no cure.

County Agriculture Chief Officer Njeru Mwita noted that previous infections were linked to low vaccine uptake and stressed the importance of full participation this time.
Addressing local chiefs and assistant chiefs from across the county, Nyaga highlighted their role in mobilizing farmers, while County Commissioner Jack Obuo called on them to ensure every cattle owner brings their animals for vaccination.
He also praised the partnership between national and county governments in promoting agricultural productivity.
The initiative forms part of Embu’s broader livestock health and food security strategy, aimed at protecting farmers’ livelihoods and strengthening the county’s agricultural output.
