The National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) has intensified its efforts to protect children from substance abuse through a major roadshow currently underway in Embu County.
The campaign, which entered its third day on Wednesday, is rallying residents to keep children safe during the ongoing school holidays by keeping homes alcohol- and drug-free.
The roadshow that has been in the upper Embu will move through Mbeere South and Mbeere North subcounties on Thursday and Friday.
Launching the campaign earlier this week, Embu West Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) Mercy Gatobu praised NACADA and partners for the initiative, saying it was timely given the rising cases of substance abuse among youth.
“Children are home for the holidays, and we must ensure they remain safe. No child should be sent to buy alcohol or cigarettes because it is against the law. Parents must take responsibility and protect our future generation,” said Gatobu.
NACADA Regional Coordinator for Embu and Tharaka Nithi, Agnes Kanyingi, and Community Working Group Chairman, Sospeter Gitonga, described the roadshow as a major boost in the fight against substance abuse.
Kanyingi said the collaboration between NACADA, local media, and community organizations would go a long way in reducing alcohol and drug abuse cases in the region.
Gitonga added that community vigilance was key to protecting young people from harmful influences.
The roadshow aims to raise awareness on the dangers of exposing children to alcohol and drugs, urging parents to be more vigilant and monitor their children’s activities.

Key messages include not sending minors to purchase alcohol or cigarettes, reporting anyone who gives children alcohol, and ensuring that families remain free from drugs and other substances.
Kimuri Radio Station Manager Felix Muriithi, popularly known as Muriithi Triple M, said the campaign was an important step in protecting the youth and commended NACADA for involving the media.

“This partnership is a great milestone and a powerful platform for sharing information. As Kimuri Radio, we are ready to support such noble causes and have even introduced discounted advertising rates for anti-drug campaigns to help spread the message widely,” Muriithi said.
Arise Media Managing Director Afan Mutugi encouraged parents to embrace positive parenting during the festive season.
“This is the time for parents to be close to their children, guide them, and help them make the right choices. Let’s raise a generation that is free from drugs and alcohol,” Mutugi said.

NACADA reminded residents that free counselling services are available through helpline number 1192, while those struggling with addiction can seek help at Cynert Hospital and Rehabilitation Centre in Mutunduri. In case of emergencies, residents can contact St. John Ambulance offices in Embu town.
The ongoing campaign seeks to promote responsible parenting, mental health awareness, and community-based prevention of substance abuse.
“Let’s all avoid drugs, maintain good mental health, and raise stable families,” the message concluded.
