Public Service, Human Capital Development and Special Programmes Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku has vowed tough action against absentee and lax civil servants, warning that complacency will no longer be tolerated in the public sector.

Speaking during an impromptu early morning inspection at the Eastern Region headquarters in Embu Town on Monday, Ruku revealed that the government is finalizing a digital system to track public servants’ productivity nationwide.

The application, expected to roll out by the end of October, will monitor arrival and departure times, leave records, and real-time attendance.

“The new platform is a game changer in enforcing discipline, enhancing accountability, and ensuring transparency in government offices,” Ruku said.

He added that efficiency in the public service is vital for the private sector, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises.

“Any delay in service delivery directly undermines economic performance,” he said.

During his visit, Ruku noted sharp contrasts in punctuality among departments. Staff at the Huduma Centre and the Immigration Department were praised for their timely reporting.

At the same time, the Lands office was criticized for having only one officer and a cleaner present at 8:00 a.m.

The CS cautioned that stricter enforcement measures will be introduced to address absenteeism and negligence, signaling a fresh crackdown on indiscipline within government offices.
