Catholics in the Diocese of Embu joined millions of Christians worldwide in observing Ash Wednesday, marking the start of the 40-day Lenten season dedicated to prayer, fasting, and almsgiving.

During the Ash Wednesday Mass at St. Anthony Dallas Catholic Church in Our Lady of Assumption parish, Rev. Fr. Isaiah Njiru urged the faithful to reflect on their spiritual lives, pray for those facing hardships, and embody Christian values.

“As Christians, we are all called to reflect and unite. Lent is a season of spiritual transformation and togetherness, where we journey in faith as one community,” said the priest, who is also the Principal of St. Augustine Teachers Training College-Ishiara.

Fr. Njiru said, “Lent is a time to renew our commitment to prayer, help those in need, and strengthen our relationship with God. Let us care for our neighbors spiritually and by addressing their physical and social needs.”

Ashes were smeared on worshippers’ foreheads in the shape of a cross, symbolizing human mortality and the call to repentance.

Fr. Njiru noted that the ritual serves as a reminder of the biblical words, “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return” (Genesis 3:19), reinforcing the need for spiritual renewal.

Congregants who spoke expressed their reflections on the significance of the day. Jane Migwi described it as a moment of deep spiritual renewal.

“This is a season of the Church where we are reminded that we are sinners and not worthy in the eyes of God. It gives Christians another chance to reflect and repent,” she said.

Catechist Titus Kinyua emphasized the essence of Lent as a period of self-purification and deeper faith.

He called on Christians to embrace prayer, good deeds, and a stronger connection with God.

“Lent is a time to renew our commitment to prayer, help those in need, and strengthen our faith,” he said.

The 40-day journey culminates on Easter Sunday, when Christians celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
