Embu businessman Kenjava Mwaniki, widely known as Wakagoto, has officially resigned as Patron of the Boda Boda Safety Association of Kenya (BAK) Embu Chapter after one year in the sector.
Wakagoto declined to renew his term, citing sector instability and the need for fresh leadership.
During his tenure, Wakagoto spearheaded transformative initiatives, including raising Sh9.3 million to support the sector, unveiling a four-year strategic plan, and constructing modern Boda Boda shades fitted with Wi-Fi and TV sets across the County.
The businessman also organized safety and peace campaigns, and sensitization seminars for the sector’s members.
Addressing the sector leaders representing 18 wards in Embu during a meeting at a hotel in Kangaru, Manyatta Constituency, Wakagoto said his decision was driven by the challenges posed by political interference, which he said had destabilized the sector.
“Some leaders have politicized my role, using my name to create divisions. I am stepping aside to allow all members to benefit equally without discrimination,” he said.
He added, “I am a businessman, not a politician. Unfortunately, some leaders have used my name to create divisions. Stepping aside will help ensure all members have equal access to opportunities without discrimination.”
Wakagoto assured members that the funds raised during his tenure remain under the safe custody of the Department of Youth and Sports under the Embu County Government, which will oversee their proper utilization.
REACTIONS FROM MEMBERS
Wakagoto’s resignation elicited mixed reactions from members of the Boda Boda sector.
While some praised his transformative contributions, others expressed concerns about the potential challenges the sector might face without his leadership.
Jim Murithi Mbogo, a boda boda operator in Embu town commended Wakagoto for uniting the sector during his tenure.
“Before he became our patron, there was a lot of disunity. He brought us together through summits and fundraising events,” Mbogo said.
However, Mbogo regretted that political interference had divided members and mismanaged resources.
“His stepping down is a courageous act to ensure fairness, but we feel his absence as a loss,” he added.
Other members voiced worries about the sustainability of the initiatives launched under Wakagoto’s leadership, but he reassured them of his continued support.
“I remain committed to completing the construction of Boda Boda shades in Runyenjes, Mbeere North, and Mbeere South Constituencies,” Wakagoto said.
CALL FOR UNITY
Wakagoto urged Boda Boda leaders to avoid politicizing the sector, which he said was crucial for its growth.
“Let’s focus on uniting the sector and supporting members’ businesses rather than bringing in politics,” he advised.
Wakagoto’s exit leaves a vacuum in the sector, and members will now look to new leadership to sustain the momentum generated during his tenure.
