Judicial workers in Embu County took to the streets on Tuesday, participating in a peaceful walk to mourn their colleague, Monica Kivuti, who was recently shot while on duty.

This demonstration aligns with similar actions across the country, as judicial staff unite in a show of support and demand for justice.

The walk began at the Embu Law Courts and saw a significant turnout of judicial workers, including clerks, magistrates, and other court staff.

Carrying placards written ‘Stop the killings, Judicial Lives Matters’, the participants marched through the town, calling for enhanced security measures for judicial officers.

Led by Environment and Land Court Judge Antony Kaniaru, who was speaking on behalf of presiding judge Lucy Njuguna, they requested the government to enhance the protection of Judicial workers in court.

Ms Kivuti was shot by a policeman at a court in the capital, Nairobi, on Thursday, June 13th, 2024 after she canceled his wife’s bail due to the woman’s absconding.

The policeman, identified as Samson Kipchirchir Kipruto, was himself shot dead by other officers following the attack.

Magistrate Kivuti succumbed to injuries while receiving medical care at a Nairobi hospital on Friday, June 14.

Until her death, Monica Kivuti was a Makadara principal Magistrate born in Embu County.

On Monday, President William Ruto condemned the act, describing her demise as ‘unacceptable’ and something that should never happen again.

“The confrontation, threats, or attacks of any form against judicial officers are unacceptable, criminal, and an affront to the rule of law,” he said.

In his condolence message, President Ruto said the country had lost a firm and hardworking judicial professional who served Kenyans with dedication.

The peaceful walk culminated at the Embu Law Courts ELC courtroom, where judiciary representatives and Guest Speaker Canon Nyaga Maringa of ACK Diocese of Embu addressed the crowd.
