The Embu County Department of Health has issued a public health advisory cautioning residents about the increasing number of stray dogs following an incident where a child was bitten on Thursday morning.

The victim was attacked while walking to school in the Dallas estate in Embu town.

The advisory highlights the potential health risks posed by these animals particularly the spread of rabies.

“This unfortunate event underscores the urgent need for immediate action to control the stray dog population in our community. We are committed to ensuring the safety and health of our residents,” said Jamal Runyenje, the County’s Health CEC.

Recent data from the department indicates a dramatic rise in stray dogs, especially near slaughterhouses.

“While most of these dogs are non-aggressive, their presence poses a potential risk to public safety and health. We call upon the locals to promptly report sightings to the Department of Health for follow-ups and action,” Runyenje noted.

Runyenje revealed that they had reached out to the County Commissioner for additional support since it was becoming a security threat to residents.

He noted that previous measures, such as poisoning stray dogs, are no longer viable due to legal changes and advocacy by animal rights activists.

“We urge the public to avoid contact with stray dogs and report any sightings to the authorities immediately. If bitten or scratched by a dog, seek medical attention without delay,” he said.

He added, “I am looking forward to joint solutions between the parties involved in this matter to eradicate this menace.”
