Embu County Government has issued a stern warning to striking doctors urging them to return to work immediately or be prepared to confront legal ramifications.
In a letter dated April 12th, 2024, the devolved unit advised on the stoppage of salary for health human resources participating in an industrial strike.
“The Human Resource and Procedures manual that guides on action to be taken on an officer that absconds duty for more than 10 days, recommends stoppage of the officer’s salary,” read a section of the letter.
According to the letter written by Medical Services Chief Officer Benjamin Kisilu, any human resource for health proceeding with a strike without adhering to court orders may be dismissed.
He said after the stoppage of the salary, the dismissal process may be initiated according to the Labor Relations Act, 2007 section 79 (6) and section 80(1:a&b).
“In this regard, therefore, you are directed to report to work immediately failure to which the contemplated action will be taken,” he said.

The letter has been copied to the Health CEC, County Secretary, CDMS, and facility in charges among other key leaders.
Doctors in Kenya went on a nationwide strike in mid-March demanding better pay and working conditions.
President William Ruto on Sunday broke his silence over the strike saying there was no money to pay striking doctors.
“We must be honest with ourselves and the truth is that we must live within our means, we can’t borrow money to pay salaries”, Ruto said.
The doctors’ union has remained adamant, and on Tuesday hundreds of doctors took part in protests and presented a petition to parliament urging lawmakers to intervene in their labor dispute.
