The Kenya Progressive Nurses Association (KPNA) has issued an earnest plea to striking doctors, urging them to heed the directives laid out by the President.

KPNA Chairman Michael Nyongesa said the Nurses Union does not support the strike that lasted for nearly two months.

Nyongesa decried the shortage of nurses in hospitals pleading with the doctors to return to their respective duties, which has compromised the sector.

“Nurses are indeed reporting to work at 7.00 am and going home at 6.00 pm, which is against the conventional way of working 8 hours a day. The government should consider employing and promoting more nurses,” Nyongesa said during a phone interview with Arise Media

During his Labor Day speech, President William Ruto urged striking doctors to resume work, pledging to address their issues while they continue to deliver healthcare services.

According to Ruto, the government faced financial constraints and couldn’t meet all their demands.

“We must address pertinent issues at hand, ensuring that essential services continue uninterruptedly,” Ruto said.

Since March 14, doctors have been protesting the Government’s failure to deploy medical interns and adhere to a 2017 agreement on labor terms.

Nyongesa decried the lack of adequate infrastructure for providing quality healthcare services, calling upon the government to improve them.

Nyongesa spoke ahead of National Nurses Week which begins every year on May 6th and ends on 12th May, commemorating Florence Nightingale’s birthday.

Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing of professional nursing, was born in Florence Italy in 1820 in an English family and was named after the city of her birth.

Nyongesa said during the event to be held in Meru County, there would be free screening for non-communicable diseases, hypertension, diabetes, and Cancer.
