The Kenyan government has unveiled plans to partner with universities, colleges, and TVET institutions to equip youth with entrepreneurial skills, as part of a broader strategy to reduce unemployment and spur inclusive economic growth.
Speaking at the second edition of the MSMEs Connect Forum at the University of Embu, Principal Secretary for Cooperatives and MSME Development, Susan Mang’eni, said the initiative aims to shift youth from job seekers to job creators by instilling an entrepreneurial mindset aligned with market demands.
“The future of our economy lies in the hands of our youth. By equipping them with relevant skills and linking them to the right opportunities, we are fostering inclusive growth,” she said.
Mang’eni emphasized the role of counties in driving industrialization through local value chains and academic partnerships, while reaffirming the government’s commitment to strengthening the MSME sector via policy reforms, market access, financial inclusion, and capacity building.
One key intervention is the Nyota Program, targeting 70 youth per ward, aged 18–29, with business development training, Sh50,000 in startup capital, mentorship, and market linkages.
In the 2025/2026 budget, over Sh10 billion has been allocated to MSMEs. Mang’eni also urged counties to streamline business licensing and called on banks to provide holistic support beyond credit, including incubation and advisory services.
She noted that nearly eight million Kenyans are listed with CRBs, hindering access to credit. To address this, the government is collaborating with KCB, Sidian Bank, and Family Bank to provide loans based on Hustler Fund performance data.
“Through the Hustler Fund, 4.5 million Kenyans have verified credit profiles. This data will help unlock financing for many who were previously excluded,” she said, adding that even defaulters will be given a second chance.
To enhance market access, Mang’eni encouraged participation in the June 27 International MSMEs Day and announced Kenya will host the East Africa MSMEs Trade Fair later this year.
She also revealed that a new national MSME policy will be launched by the end of 2025 to institutionalize current commitments and guide long-term sector growth.
The forum brought together youth-led enterprises, financial institutions, and development partners for mentorship, networking, and innovation showcases.
