Embu Senator Alexander Munyi Mundigi has defended the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), urging Kenyans to have confidence in the electoral body as political debate intensifies ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Speaking in Mbeere North Constituency during an empowerment programme, Mundigi dismissed concerns raised by some opposition leaders over the credibility and independence of the IEBC, saying he was confident the commission would discharge its mandate independently. Mundigi is the elected Senator for Embu County, having won the seat in the 2022 General Election.

The Senator also rejected claims linking the loss of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga in the 2022 presidential election to alleged incompetence within the electoral commission.

Mundigi, however, called on the IEBC to closely monitor political leaders accused of inciting violence ahead of the 2027 polls, urging the commission to take action against those found to have breached electoral laws.

The Senator spoke during an empowerment programme where he distributed eight computers to four schools, cooking equipment to Kianganja Women Group in Muminji, water pipes to residents of Gaturi and footballs to six local football teams.

The programme brought together residents and beneficiaries from different parts of Mbeere North, with the donations aimed at supporting education, women’s groups, access to water and youth sporting activities.
