A group of dedicated religious sisters in the Catholic Diocese of Embu has started training workers on safeguarding practices to ensure the safety and protection of children and vulnerable individuals.

With an unwavering commitment to social responsibility and ethical stewardship, sisters of the Good Shepherd congregation are empowering communities to create environments that prioritize the welfare of the most vulnerable.

“Protecting the vulnerable is not just a responsibility but a collective moral imperative. By working together and sharing knowledge, we can create safer environments where individuals are valued and protected,” said Sr. Jane Wainoi.

Sr. Wainoi said the training was necessitated by the rising cases of mistreatment and abuse of children in recent months.

She revealed that their rescue center at Matangiri-Karurina in the outskirts of Embu town has been operating at full capacity for the past three years, prompting urgent calls for action.

“The sustained demand for services at the rescue center underscores the systemic issues that perpetuate cycles of exploitation and abuse within communities,” she said.

She revealed that after seeing the need, they undertook one of their social workers through training, and now she has assumed a leadership role in training others.

Damaris Mukiri, the social worker, emphasized the critical need to safeguard and respect the rights of every individual, irrespective of their age, background, or circumstances.

“We must strive to create environments where every person feels valued, respected, and empowered to live free from harm,” she said.

Central to her message is the notion that safeguarding is not merely a legal or ethical obligation but a moral imperative rooted in justice and compassion.

The participants were trained on recognizing signs of mistreatment and abuse, legal and ethical considerations, preventive measures and intervention strategies, effective communication, community collaboration, and support networks.

Through targeted education and awareness programs, they envision a gradual transformation where attitudes shift, behaviors evolve, and communities become safer and more inclusive for all individuals.
