Leaders in Manyatta Constituency of Embu County have united in a call for a reduction in electricity prices to ease the financial strain on residents.
MP John Gitonga Mukunji and Kithimu Ward MCA Julius Karuri said the high cost of electricity was discouraging trade in the area, further affecting the economy.
“The soaring cost of electricity has become a major contributor to the financial hardships faced by locals. It has also discouraged many people from installing it in their homes,” said Mukunji.
Speaking at Full Gospel Church-Kiandundu, Kithimu Ward during a public hearing on the demand for electricity in individual households, the duo maintained that availability of electricity is essential for development of any area.
“Our people are grappling with the harsh economic realities and the escalating electricity prices. It is imperative that we address this issue head-on to ensure the well-being of our constituents,” MCA Karuri noted.
The MP said his office had plans to light villages experiencing darkness in Manyatta, citing a major setback for the growth of the communities.
He added that introducing electricity would create digital job opportunities, mitigating the prevalent issue of job scarcity and fostering economic growth.
Wanjiku Mwithiga, a resident, said the introduction of electricity in Kiandundu village would reduce the burden of walking for long distances to print homework assignments for their children.
She said installation of power in the village would attract university students who seek a conducive environment for E-learning something that could promote local businesses.
