The Agricultural Society of Kenya (ASK) Embu branch has kicked off preparations for the 2025 Embu Agricultural Show by organizing a 42-kilometer cycling race to promote youth participation in agriculture.

Davis Kamau from Iten emerged as the winner in the Mountain Bike category, finishing in 1 hour and 7 minutes to beat 210 competitors.

He took home Sh30,000 in prize money. His counterpart, Peterson Kamau, secured second place with a time of 1 hour and 11 minutes, earning Sh20,000.

In the Black Mamba category, Joyce Njeri from Kisii claimed victory, completing the race in 1 hour and 37 minutes.

The race, which began at the Embu’s Moi Stadium, stretched to Kianjokoma in Manyatta before looping back to the starting point.

ASK Embu Chairperson Martin Mutwiri emphasized that the event was designed to encourage young people to embrace modern agricultural practices.

“The future of food production depends on young people adopting modern techniques. This event encourages them to see agriculture as a dynamic and profitable industry,” Mutwiri stated.

He also announced that the 2025 Embu Agricultural Show, set for March 13 to 15 at Jukiri Showground, will focus on climate-smart agriculture and trade initiatives for sustainable economic growth.

Participants set for the race.

Over 150 exhibitors from various sectors, including banking, education, agriculture, and finance, have already registered.

Young entrepreneurs were urged to take advantage of the exhibition to showcase their innovations and network with industry leaders.

Cyclists praised the initiative, noting that such events provide economic opportunities and promote mental and physical well-being.

“Many young people are jobless, and initiatives like this empower them by providing financial opportunities,” said Geoffrey Kariuki from Nairobi.

Davis Kamau, 21, said the race helped him sharpen his skills ahead of an upcoming international competition in Kabarnet on March 30.
