A psychological counselor has advocated for the inclusion of a mandatory psychological counseling course in school curricula.

Rev. Fr. Isaiah Njiru, the Kenya Counselling and Psychological Association (KCPA) Embu chapter chairman believes that such a course could significantly benefit students’ mental well-being.

Expressing concerns about the increasing prevalence of mental health issues in the region, Fr. Njiru argued that a psychological counseling course would equip young minds with essential skills to navigate the complexities of life.

He emphasized the importance of addressing mental health from a holistic perspective, acknowledging the role of schools in shaping not just academic but also emotional intelligence.

“Schools serve as a primary environment where mental health issues often surface. By embedding counseling services within schools, we can offer timely intervention and support to needy students,” he said.

The priest who doubles as the St. Augustine Teachers Training College-Ishiara Principal noted that the college started a Psychological Counselling Diploma course to help control the alarming rise in mental health issues.

“The prevalence of anxiety, depression, and stress-related disorders among the locals, with many struggling to cope with social expectations and personal challenges should not be taken lightly. This is why we started the course,” he said.

The priest noted that locals especially men aged between 20 and 50 years were the most affected saying the toll on teachers and nurses underscores the broader issue of mental health in the workplace and the need for comprehensive support systems.

Fr. Njiru said during holidays, the Counsellors Association organizes Mental Health Awareness programs in partnership with St. Augustine TTC-Ishiara, Kimuri FM, Police, Embu County Comrades Students Organization (ECCSO), Faulu Kenya, Nurses Associations, County Government, and Nacada among other organizations.
