Young creatives in Embu County have urged the county government to establish policies and legislation that recognise, nurture and commercialise diverse talents beyond sports.
Led by Olive Wambui from Runyenjes Constituency, the youth presented their proposals during a consultative meeting with county officials responsible for sports and talent development, raising concerns over what they termed an overemphasis on sports at the expense of other creative disciplines.
The creatives called on the county government to create an inclusive framework that supports diverse talents, including individual creative pursuits, and provides young people with opportunities to commercialise their skills and earn sustainable livelihoods.
Responding to their concerns, Embu County Chief Officer for Sports and Talent Development Charles Njagi assured the youth of the county government’s commitment to working with them to promote holistic talent development.
Njagi said the proposal submitted by the creatives would help guide the development of relevant legislation and policies to strengthen talent identification, nurturing and promotion across the county.
He explained that sports often receive greater public attention because of their group and team-based nature, compared with individual talent pursuits, but maintained that the county government was committed to supporting all forms of talent.
The engagement comes amid calls for greater recognition of the creative sector as an avenue for youth empowerment, employment creation and economic growth.
