Muminji MCA unveiled as BUS party candidate in heated Mbeere North By-Election race

The Devolution Empowerment Party (BUS) has officially named Newton Kariuki as its candidate for the Mbeere North parliamentary by-election, setting the stage for a high-stakes political battle.

Announcing the decision during a press briefing, party chairman Lenny Kivuti expressed confidence in Kariuki, affirming that the BUS party is ready to contest not just in Mbeere North, but across the country in the lead-up to the 2027 general election.

“The BUS party will remain autonomous and will not merge with any other political party — not now, not ever, until Jesus comes,” Kivuti declared, underscoring the party’s intent to grow independently.

Former Meru Governor and senior party official Kiraitu Murungi echoed Kivuti’s remarks, emphasizing that internal growth and grassroots mobilization are the party’s top priorities.

“Our eyes are on 2027. We are not in a rush to join hands with anyone. Let others come to us,” he said.

Kariuki, while accepting the party’s nomination, said he is prepared to hit the ground running once the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) announces the election date.

“We are more than ready for this by-election,” he stated.

Kariuki who is the third term MCA for Muminji ward in Mbeere North, will face a crowded and competitive field that includes former MP Muriuki Njagagua, his brother Dr. Murage Njagagua, Embu Assembly Speaker Josiah Thiriku, philanthropist Jacob Ireri Mbao, Evurore MCA Duncan Mbui, and Konji Kwayo.

The by-election, prompted by the appointment of Geoffrey Ruku as Cabinet Secretary for Public Service, Human Capital Development and Special Programs, is expected to serve as a key test of political muscle in the region.

Kenya Kwanza, under which Ruku was elected, is expected to front a strong candidate, with sources indicating that former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua may endorse a contender.

Meanwhile, former Public Service CS Justin Muturi, a native of Mbeere North, is reportedly strategizing to support a candidate of his own.

The IEBC is yet to announce the official date of the by-election.
