Over one million shillings worth of property has been destroyed after a fire broke out at Gatunduri Mixed Day Secondary School in Manyatta Constituency, Embu County.
Mbeti North chief Jacob Kamongo said the school’s watchman, noticed smoke coming from the science laboratory at around 11 a.m. on Sunday and immediately raised the alarm, shouting for help.
“His call attracted members of the local community, who quickly rushed to the scene to assist in putting out the fire,” Chief Kamongo said.
He noted that with the community’s help, the fire was contained after two hours, preventing it from spreading to other parts of the school. The Embu County fire engine arrived to help extinguish the remaining flames.
Kamongo noted that an investigation had been launched to determine the cause of the mid-morning fire.
He also commended the local community for their swift response, which helped avert a greater disaster.
“No injuries were reported, but the school has suffered considerable losses, particularly in its science department,” Chief Kamongo added.
The incident has left locals astonished, as it occurred on a school off day when no students or staff were present.
