Embu governor Cecily Mbarire has refuted claims that she sponsored Bodaboda operators with Sh350,000 to disrupt Gen-Z demonstrations.

The allegations sparked controversy, with Bodaboda operators beating up their leaders for allegedly denying them their share of funds offered by politicians, including the governor.

The unrest by Embu town operators culminated in the physical assault of their County and Kirimari Ward chairpersons by disgruntled operators on Tuesday.

The BodaBoda Association of Kenya (BAK) Embu chairman Martin Mucira alias Kaa Ngumu and John Kavuri, Kirimari Ward BodaBoda Chairman faced the wrath of the agitated crowd.

Speaking to a local media station on Wednesday, Governor Mbarire denied any involvement in financing the Bodaboda operators to interfere with the protests.

“I have never and will never engage in such activities. These accusations are baseless and are meant to tarnish my reputation,” she said.

Governor Mbarire did acknowledge that there had been instances of sponsored goons attempting to destroy her office and other public facilities.

However, she refuted giving any specific names, citing ongoing investigations.

“While it is true that some individuals have been sponsored to cause destruction, it is premature to release any names at this stage. Investigations are underway, and we will let the law take its course,” she remarked.
