President William Ruto on Friday appointed ten women as ambassadors and six as their deputies to maintain diplomatic relations in different countries.
Some of the nominated female ambassadors are Prof. Anne Kisaka Nanguli (Dakar, Senegal), Jessica Muthoni Gakinya (Rabat, Morocco), Halima Yussuf Mucheke (The Hague, Netherlands) and Everylyne Mwenda Karisa (Havana, Cuba).
Addressing the public during the International Women’s Day celebrations at Embu Moi Stadium, the head of state noted that his administration has plans for women to reduce gender imbalances in leadership positions.
Ruto said his plans were in line with the two-thirds gender principle, which provides that not more than two-thirds of the members in any elective or appointive positions shall be of the same gender.
“To transform Kenya, my administration has embarked on plans to empower women socially, politically, and economically,” he said.
“The imperative must underpin our blueprint for radical national transformation to facilitate full engagement and robust participation of women in every dimension of our development agenda,” he added.
Ruto said the government will increase funding for women as they are vulnerable to poor health services and the adverse effects of climatic changes.
“We have disbursed 942 million shillings to 1.4 million women who are members of 53,000 women groups that are already accessing affordable financial facilities through the women’s fund,” he said.
He said women contribute hugely to raising national revenue through farming activities, urging them to intensify their efforts.
“In efforts to increase food security in the country, we are going to deliver more seeds and fertilizers to support our farmers, who are mainly women,” the President noted.
Tens of women leaders including the seven female governors and cabinet secretaries were in attendance.
The seven female governors are; Anne Waiguru (Kirinyaga), Cecily Mbarire (Embu), Susan Kihika (Nakuru), Fatuma Achani (Kwale), Kawira Mwangaza (Meru), Wavinya Ndeti (Machakos) and Gladys Wanga of Homabay county.
