Three families were left homeless after a fire burnt down their houses in the Shauri area of Embu town.
Nobody was injured during the Monday afternoon inferno as occupants of the three houses were said to be away when the incident occurred.
Locals assisted in putting out the fire.
“We were attracted by screams and huge smoke billowing from the building,” said Njeru Fundi, a trader in the area.
Fundi said the fire consumed everything in its path, while Embu County firefighters arrived tragically late, leaving the families to bear the brunt of an irreparable loss.

“I have lost not only my house but also cherished belongings and memories I have accumulated over the years,” said Mercy Wanjiru, a victim.
Residents blamed the County Fire Department for late response saying the damage could have been controlled if they arrived on time.
Eliud Gitau, a village elder called for a thorough investigation to determine the origin and cause of the destructive blaze.
Locals called upon the government and people of goodwill to offer support to the victims.
