Food vendors operating outside Shakahola Miraa Market in Kirimari Ward, Embu town, have received a boost after Kirimari MCA Ibrahim Swaleh provided shade structures and aprons to improve their working conditions.
Speaking during the launch of the initiative, Swaleh said the project aims to shield vendors from extreme weather and enhance hygiene standards in the busy market.
“These traders have been working under harsh conditions, exposed to the scorching sun and heavy rains. By providing them with shade, we are ensuring they operate in a more conducive environment, which will enhance their businesses,” Swaleh stated.
The vendors, who sell cooked food, vegetables, and snacks, welcomed the initiative, citing improved hygiene and better customer experiences.
“We have struggled with the absence of shade, and our food would sometimes get contaminated due to rain exposure. Now, we can serve our customers with confidence,” said Maureen Makena, a food vendor.

Alfred Mutua, a chapati seller, noted that the improved working environment would attract more customers, boosting their income.
Dorothy Kary, a Githeri vendor, said the shade would allow them to work comfortably throughout the day, without losing customers due to extreme heat.
Swaleh further announced plans to enhance lighting in the market to allow vendors to operate into the evening, improving both security and business hours.
