Residents living near the Seven Forks Dams and along the Tana River have been advised to move to higher ground as rising water levels threaten to cause flooding.
In an urgent advisory statement, authorities warned that continuous heavy rains have significantly increased inflows from the Mount Kenya and Aberdare catchments, raising water levels in the cascade of dams.
The Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) stated that Masinga Dam is expected to reach its full supply level in few days time, with Kiambere Dam expected to follow soon after.
“Water levels across the Seven Forks dams are rising rapidly,” KenGen said in a statement, urging residents to avoid riverbanks and dam areas, and to suspend farming, fishing, and grazing activities nearby.
Communities have been asked to stay alert, monitor official updates, and report emergencies promptly. KenGen assured that it is closely tracking the situation and will continue providing regular updates.
The alert comes as heavy rains continue to batter several regions, raising the risk of flooding in low-lying areas downstream of the dams.
