A confrontation between police and Muguka traders escalated into chaos on Monday evening, resulting in significant disruptions to the transport system at Ena along the Embu-Meru highway.
The police arrested one trader accused of inciting the protest.
This is the third day Muguka traders have taken to the streets in opposition to the Muguka ban, which has recently been enforced in three counties including Mombasa, Kilifi, and Taita Taveta.
The ban which prohibits the entry, sale, distribution, and use of Muguka and its products in these regions, sparked concerns among ethnic groups comprising the Embu, Mbeere, and Meru who depend on Muguka as a source of economic activity.
The traders argue that the ban is unfair and detrimental to their economic well-being.
Alvin Ruku, their leader urged political leaders and the court to intervene as many farmers within Embu County rely on Muguka as a source of income.
The situation remains volatile, with further protests anticipated as traders continue to demand the lifting of the ban.
As tensions rise, the authorities face the challenge of maintaining order while addressing the concerns of the affected traders.
Elsewhere, the High Court of Kenya sitting at Mombasa on Monday declined to issue Interim Orders suspending the Executive Order by HE The Governor of Mombasa prohibiting the Sale and distribution of the Miraa variety known as Muguuka.
The Court ordered that the respondents including Governor Abdullswamad Sherrif Nassir, the County Secretary, and the Inspector-General of Police be served and that the parties appear before the Court on Thursday, May 30th, 2024 for further directions.
