Parents have been urged to walk closely with their children and use positive language in upbringing as a way of addressing social challenges affecting the youth, including teenage pregnancies and exposure to inappropriate content online.

Speaking during the Annual General Meeting (AGM) at St. Ursula Nguviu Girls Boarding Primary and Junior Secondary School, Monica Wambui, the Moderator of the Kenya National Council of Catholic Women (KNCCW) and a Board Member at the school, said parents must remain available and emotionally present for their children.

“Try your best to walk in every journey with your children. Let them not learn from the internet. Walk with them—it will help them to open up,” she said, noting the increasing number of teenage mothers in the country.

Wambui emphasized the importance of using language that builds rather than breaks.

“Even when there is hunger, we must use words that soften. The language we use is what children pick and carry into adulthood,” she said.

Her sentiments were echoed by Rev. Fr. Adrian Ireri, the parish priest of Holy Family Nguviu Parish, who represented the school’s sponsor—the Catholic Church.

He advised parents to regulate how their children use mobile phones and other digital devices.

He warned that failure to guide children on phone use could expose them to harmful content, citing an incident where a girl prayed for “naked ladies in her father’s phone” to be clothed, shocking visitors at the family’s home.

“The phones we give our children should contain clean content. As parents, we must lead by example,” said Fr. Ireri.

A section of parents follow proceedings during the schools AGM.

The school’s headteacher, Mrs. Esther Ndwiga, urged parents to ensure their daughters are decently dressed and to maintain open communication at home.

“Let the girls feel safe to tell you what disturbs them. That’s how we can support them properly,” she said.

Several parents commended the school’s role in nurturing discipline and academic growth. Caroline Wanjiru Njeru said the school has contributed to the holistic development of the girls, including in spiritual formation and co-curricular activities.

Another parent, Alice Njanja, with three daughters enrolled at the school, praised the teachers’ commitment and cooperation with parents.

Salesio Mwaniki, whose daughter is sitting for the KPSEA exams, expressed confidence in her performance and called on parents to support the school’s efforts.

“I believe my daughter will excel. I urge other parents to consider St. Ursula for quality education and character development,” said Mwaniki.
