Local leaders and children advocates in Embu County have called on those capable, to extend their support towards the education of underprivileged children.
Speaking during the Day of African Child celebrations at Karurumo Primary School, Runyenjes, Embu County, the speakers emphasized the importance of providing equal educational opportunities to all children, regardless of their socio-economic background.
“It is not a must you be a leader to support children achieve their education. Every community member can play a role to ensure our children get the education they deserve,” said Woman Representative Pamela Njoki.
Njoki emphasized the role of education in breaking the cycle of poverty and empowering future generations, a statement echoed by Eambu East Deputy County Commissioner Jane Waruinge.
“We all have a responsibility to ensure no child is left behind. Supporting education should be a communal effort, and everyone has a part to play,” Waruinge said.
At the same time, Waruinge warned those barring children from accessing their rights, noting that some cases do not progress as they should.
“Those who prevent children from accessing their rights will face the full force of the law,” Waruinge warned.
County Director of Children Services, Davelyne Mundi, emphasized the urgency of addressing educational disparities and the need for immediate action to ensure every child has access to quality education.
This year’s theme, ‘Education for All Children in Africa: The Time is Now,’ underscores the urgent need to ensure inclusive and equitable education for every child.

“Every child, regardless of their abilities, has the right to education and should be enabled to thrive. Hiding disabled children denies them their rights and opportunities,” noted Esther Nyaga, Curriculum Support Officer (CSO), Special Needs Education (SNE), Embu East Sub-County.
Although the Day of the African Child is normally observed on the 16th of June every year, Embu County marked it at Karurumo Primary School in Runyenjes Constituency on June 14th, 2024.
“We marked the day on 14th June 2024 to align with this year’s educational theme. Hosting it on a school day seamlessly emphasizes the importance of quality education as envisioned in Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4 and Kenya Education Strategic Plan,” said Sospeter Gitonga, the Embu County Child Protection Network (ECCPN) chairman.
During the celebrations, various performances by learners highlighted the importance of education and children’s rights.
The performances included skits, songs, and poems that underscored the theme of this year’s event.
