The floods experienced in lower parts of river Tana are due to overflowing of rivers downstream the Seven-folks dams

The Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) has refuted claims that the floodings occurring in some parts of Kenya throughout this period of intense rainfall is due to high water flows from Masinga Dam.
Eng. Isaac Tarus, the Eastern hydros acting manager, said Masinga dam cannot cause flooding since the water levels flowing in the dam are too low.
“The floods experienced in lower parts of river Tana are due to overflowing of rivers downstream the Seven-folks dams,” he said.
He noted that Masinga, which is the Seven-folks dams’ reservoir, holds a maximum capacity of 1056 meters above sea level but currently it’s water levels are at 1042 above sea level.
At the same time, KenGen assured residents living near Masinga dam that the current heavy rains will not cause flooding which could cause destruction of properties saying they expect the dam to spill in April 2024.
Mr. Tarus said their power plants are generating adequate energy to sustain the country, blaming electric power distribution companies for the power outages scenarios experienced in the country.
KenGen is planning to invest on a solar energy plant, hoping to generate 42 megawatts thus increasing power production.
