The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has moved to calm growing anxiety in Mbeere North Constituency, assuring residents that security has been reinforced ahead of Thursday’s by-election.

IEBC CEO Marjan Hussein, speaking in Embu after a consultative meeting with the County Security Committee, said the commission is fully prepared to deliver a peaceful, free and credible poll.

He confirmed that all logistical arrangements have been finalized, with both strategic and non-strategic election materials set for dispatch on Wednesday.

Constituency Returning Officer John Kinyua said 55,124 registered voters will take part in the mini-poll, which will be conducted across 124 polling stations in Evurore, Nthawa and Muminji wards.

Kinyua dismissed claims by opposition leaders that the IEBC planned to use the 2027 voter register, insisting that the certified 2022 roll will be used as required.

He emphasized that recent registrants will not be locked out and reiterated that the integrity of results is protected under current electoral laws. Results declared at polling stations, he noted, are final and cannot be altered.

Nine candidates have been cleared to vie for the parliamentary seat, with the contest shaping up as a close duel between UDA’s Leonard Muthende and the joint opposition candidate, Newton Kariuki of the Democratic Party (DP).
