Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki has assured Kenyans of humanitarian aid during this period of heavy rainfall.
Kindiki said the government would evacuate residents living along the banks of the Kiambere Dam within the next 10 days should the current intensification of rainfall persist.
The decision comes in response to the heightened risk of flooding and potential hazards posed by the rising water levels.
“Residents in the vicinity of Kiambere Dam, as well as those downstream of dams, will be the first to get affected by the projected flooding. The government is ready to evacuate them should rains continue,” he said.
Kindiki said the government has taken proactive measures by deploying enough emergency security teams to monitor the situation closely.
“Emergency Security officers will provide swift alerts in case the ongoing rains escalate to emergency levels so that the government can evacuate the residents to safer
grounds,” he noted.
Authorities are urging all individuals residing in the designated evacuation zones to immediately leave their homes and seek shelter in designated evacuation centers.
Residents are advised to follow the instructions provided by authorities and the meteorological department.
